Wine of the Month September

As summer is starting to take its last goodbyes and fall is knocking on our doors it’s time to welcome September and our next wine of the month: Viognier 2015 (pronounced vee-ohn-yay)!

Selectively handpicked in September in the beautiful PGI Danubian Plain region this lighter, leaner Viognier with 13,5% ABV has fresh and tender taste with pleasant sweet notes. Fermentation in a stainless steel tank and Sur lie aging for one month led to a wine worth trying!

Loaded with fine and complex aromas of apricot, peach and white flowers, enhanced by the sur lie aging it is an aroma you will remember and sense in its long aftertaste and fruity finish.

Its color resembles most of the leaves at this time of the year– light-pale yellow with some greenish tones remaining!

 Pairing Tips

Due to its unique flavor profile, Viognier is actually a very food-friendly wine, making it a great choice when planning a difficult wine pairing. Some good pairings include:

o   Wide variety of seafood and shellfish: Scallops, lobster, crab, shrimp;

o   Nuts: Cashews, macadamias;

o   Soft and semisoft cheeses: Fresh chèvre, gruyère, aged gouda, French brie;

o   Roasted or grilled chicken, veal, pork.

Viognier is also good for some intriguing food matches with spicy flavors often seen in Asian cuisine. Try some Macadamia-crusted fish with it, mild spicy noodle dishes like Pad Thai or creamy seafood curry and you will know what I am talking about. And for dessert pair this Viognier with some baked cinnamon pears, one word – delicious!

Typically, the younger the Viognier the better - aging allows the strong fruity aroma of Viognier to fade away, which is something you surely do not want. Viognier should be served at around 50 (10) - cooler than room temperature. This allows the full, rich flavors of the wine to come forth. But beware, if you serve a white wine too cold your tongue cannot taste its flavors.

So this month open up a bottle (or two) of our Viognier 2015, enjoy the last days of summer and welcome the colorful fall!
